By the time August rolls around, you’ve already been to every pool and splash pad more times than you can count and everyone is looking for a creative way to beat the heat. You can put an exclamation mark at the end of your summer by making muddy memories at Hog Splash 2019! Hog Splash is a mud volleyball tournament hosted annually by Hospice Brazos Valley and Slovacek’s Sausage which will take place on Saturday, August 24th in Snook, Texas. Snook’s central location provides the perfect opportunity to allow the communities of Brenham, Caldwell, Somerville, Lyons, Navasota, and Bryan-College Station to all come together to make a splash while supporting local non-profit Hospice Brazos Valley.
At Hog Splash, teams of 8-10 players ham it up while playing volleyball in pits that are dug out of the dirt and then filled knee deep with water. Starting at 9:00am, each team plays several quick 15 minute games throughout the morning. All teams are co-ed, and play is in a recreational format requiring teams to use underhand serves only. Games continue till early afternoon until three teams come out head and snout above the rest and are awarded trophies, medals, and bragging rights till next year. Creative and funny team names are highly encouraged! Past memorable Hog Splash team names have included “Mud, Sweat, and Beers”, “Muddzilla”, “Rump Roasters”, “Mud Slingers”, and “Muddy Buddies”.
Dianne Lero, Fund Development Supervisor for Hospice Brazos Valley states, “All skill levels are welcome to come out and play volleyball at Hog Splash. However, if getting muddy isn’t your thing, there are many great ways to participate in Hog Splash and support Hospice Brazos Valley through sponsorship, volunteering, donating, or just spectating. Bring your lawn chair, kick back with a cold beverage, and watch everyone go hog wild! Guests and spectators are free to attend.” Hog Splash is a family friendly event offering food, cold soft-drinks and beer, a mud pit just for the piglets (kids). You’ll also have an opportunity to enter a raffle to win a 30 quart K2 Cooler donated by Citizens State Bank or a gift certificate from Slovacek’s. This year, Hog Splash is excited to feature new and delicious food offerings from JLM Chicken and Waffles, some of the best barbeque around from 1775 Texas Pit BBQ, and snow cones from Kona Ice.
While Hog Splash is a unique way to have fun in the sun, it also serves as a meaningful fundraiser for Hospice Brazos Valley, the only non-profit hospice provider serving 17 central Texas counties. Founded in 1989, Hospice Brazos Valley was the first hospice to serve the Brazos Valley and continues to be the leader in hospice care 30 years later with offices in Bryan, Brenham, and La Grange. Their team of doctors, nurses, care aides, social workers, chaplains, grief support professionals, volunteers, and administrative staff provide award-winning hospice care to all in need, regardless of ability to pay. Community support from events like Hog Splash ensures that extraordinary end of life care, grief counseling and support, and community education remain available to the community when they need it most. President and CEO, Craig Borchardt, Ph.D., states, “Central to Hospice Brazos Valley’s 30 years of excellence in hospice care is our unwavering commitment to serve our patients and families. We are single-minded in our desire to make sure each of our patients has the best end-of-life experience possible. The community has time and time again demonstrated that it shares our passion to serve others. We are grateful for the community’s continued support. Hog Splash provides another opportunity for us to celebrate 30 years of service while raising funds to ensure the future of award-winning hospice care in the Brazos Valley.”
Slovacek’s Sausage is looking forward to its 9th year as the title sponsor for this event. Laura Riley, CFO of Slovacek’s Sausage states that they welcome the opportunity to support local non-profits like Hospice Brazos Valley and Slovacek’s enjoys giving back to the community by hosting Hog Splash annually. Ms. Riley also states, “When we give to a non-profit like Hospice Brazos Valley, it feels good to know that we are investing in families in our community who need medical care to sustain quality of life during a difficult time. We continue to support Hospice Brazos Valley through events like Hog Splash so that local families get the care they deserve.”
