In 2007, a group of older adults in our community noticed friends spending too much time alone at home. They wanted a fun way to get those folks out of the house and socializing again.
The Parks & Recreation Department collaborated with the Senior Advisory Group, and Senior Autumn Fest — a social picnic just for seniors — was born. What started as a simple idea for an autumn picnic has become one of the season’s most anticipated events for senior adults.
For more than a decade, hundreds of adults 55 years and older have gathered to enjoy an evening of dancing, door prizes, fellowship, and fun. With the leaves changing colors and temperatures cooling, the annual Senior Autumn Fest is again just around the corner.
Seniors are invited to bring friends to the free celebration from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the American Pavilion at Veterans Park & Athletic Complex. Autumn Fest begins with a welcome from Parks and Recreation Director Steve Wright, followed by a prayer and the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.
Hamburgers will be served, along with a classic cake walk with desserts donated by event sponsors. We’ll also have door prizes and entertainment by the Lil Aggie Wranglers and Rhythm Rockers.
Participants are encouraged to wear costumes, and prizes will be awarded for the best dressed. Registration isn’t required. For more information, visit cstx.gov/seniors or call 979.764.6351.
