Navasota Railroad St CIP Project Completion
Ribbon Cutting 5/12/22 @ 12pm
Please join the City of Navasota and the Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce in a Ribbon Cutting, celebrating the completion of the Railroad Street CIP project at 12:00pm on Thursday May 12, 2022.
The Railroad Street project is officially complete! The Railroad Street Revitalization Project was initiated by the City of Navasota to address the need for updated storm drain and water infrastructure, along with revitalization and beautification of the streets and sidewalks to compliment the private development in downtown Navasota.
Many improvements were made to Railroad Street over the course of 1 year. This included upgrades to concrete box culverts, piping, and storm inlets to improve street water flow and substantially mitigate flooding and drainage concerns in the downtown area. This work increased capacity by 3 times more than the original downtown storm drainage system. Crews also replaced the water main system and installed underground conduit to eliminate overhead hanging telephone lines along the street. Public works completely remodeled 2 full blocks of Railroad Street, increasing sidewalk, redesigning, and remarking 43 parking spaces, adding 8 planter boxes with seasonal florals, 4 new streetlights, 3 park benches and 300 ft black wrought iron fence alongside the railroad tracks. The project also included switching Railroad Street from a two-way to a one-way street traveling from South to North to accommodate current and future growth and development
The City of Navasota received a 2016 GLO CDBG-DR award in the amount of $2 million for the Railroad Street storm sewer/drainage improvements and the City also contributed additional funds to the project. Additionally, the City’s Foundation for Community Projects was awarded grant funding by the Union Pacific Foundation to partially cover the cost of the decorative black iron fence along Railroad Street for both decorative and safety purposes. The rest of the cost of the fencing that was not covered by the grant was paid for by the City of Navasota.
