Medical Director & Founder of Aggieland Urgent Care
What inspired you to enter the medical field, and what has that journey looked like?
I was inspired to go into Medicine because of a severe depression my mom had during my younger years. I thought I would go into Psychiatry, but felt led by God to go into Family medicine and do Missionary Medicine in Africa.
Tell us more about your continued mission work in Nigeria.
We have helped start 4 Mission Hospitals in Nigeria in the last 30 years. We continue to take teams of medical and ministry into Nigeria, mostly in the cities of Kaduna and Port Harcourt. We usually stay 2-3 weeks at a time and go 2-3 times a year. On the medical side we do General and Gynecological surgeries and consult on medical cases as well. Several local churches and missionaries assist in this endeavor.
How has Aggieland Urgent Care’s first months of operation been so far?
Our first few months have been hectic. We went from seeing 4-5 patients for Covid testing to 50 patients a day in 4 days. Needless to say we had to start making appointments and adjust our staff. Several of the local Free-standing ERs were happy to refer people to us, because they were getting overwhelmed.
We opened here because this is home. Dr. Quartemont and his family have been in the area for the past 30 years practicing medicine and raising their 4 boys.
How has Aggieland Urgent Care navigated the COVID-19 pandemic?
It was very difficult to build and open in the midst of a pandemic. Thank God we live in Texas where we would rather stay open than shut down, but it was still difficult to manage all the details. On the other hand it gave us instant business because we do the Rapid Covid testing.
What types of services do you offer?
We offer health exams and screening lab/x-ray, the usual bumps, bruises and rashes. We are mostly doing Covid testing right now, where insurance is covering most if not all of the cost. We also handle Fractures, Lacerations, various infections requiring antibiotics and intravenous hydration. We can handle almost anything but true emergencies like Heart attacks, Strokes, Major Trauma and respiratory failure.
How has opening Aggieland Urgent Care affected your work overseas so far?
The pandemic has affected our medical missions more than the opening of our urgent care. We had to cancel our summer trip and we had to scale back our trip in Oct. We plan to meet a team in April and do more surgery and consulting.
What’s on the horizon for Aggieland Urgent Care?
We would like to build our practice to become a reliable and compassionate place to come for your urgent medical needs. We believe in treating the whole person-Spirit, Soul, and Body. When we can’t handle something, we will get you to the right people who can. We would like to be the model business so that other businesses would want to emulate.
