February Events Celebrate African American
History Month And The Undeniable Value Of Knowledge

An African proverb says, “Knowledge is a garden. If it isn’t cultivated, you can’t harvest it.”
Since February is African American History Month, we encourage you to expand your knowledge. For example, you can learn about Mansu Musa I of Mali — the wealthiest person in history — or Eleanor Toliver Williams, the first- African American air traffic controller and a 1957 graduate of Lincoln High. It’s also worth visiting the new Matthew Gaines statue on the Texas A&M campus.
History is our guiding light, and without its knowledge, we’re without direction.
In celebration of African American History Month, the Lincoln Recreation Center plays host to a variety of free events to expand your knowledge:
Financial Literacy (ages 18+)
Thursday, Feb. 3 • 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Learn about financial literacy, debt management, and how to make better money decisions with Frost Bank. Lunch is provided. Registration is required and ends on Feb. 3.
Ujamaa Market Place (all ages)
Saturday, Feb. 5 • 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Enjoy a day of shopping at black-owned businesses and Afrocentric vendors. Shop for homemade goods and unique gifts such as apparel, art, jewelry, food, candles, and much more.
We Are Black History (all ages)
Thursday, Feb. 24 • 4:45-6:45 p.m.
Lincoln Recreation Center youth and local organizations take us on a journey through the history of black excellence. They explore African American inventors, poets, musicians, dancers, and young entrepreneurs and visionaries exhibit their knowledge and creations. Light refreshments are served.
