Your professional orchestra – the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra™ continues its 38th year with a very special performance in the “Kaleidoscope of Classics” season. The BVSO™ worldAsleep At The Wheel Celebrates 50th Anniversary Tour With The BVSO™-class musicians and Music Director Marcelo Bussiki will be hosting a concert with a genuine Texas treasure: Asleep at the Wheel. The BVSO™ is proud to once again partner with CHI St. Joseph Health as the official sponsor for the 2019-2020 Season and is truly grateful to our concert sponsor, The Clearfield Family.
This special concert will take place at 5pm on March 22, 2020 in Rudder Auditorium on the Texas A&M University Campus. Asleep at the Wheel along with the BVSO™ musicians promise a night of live country music and great fun. The band, with legendary founding member Ray Benson, began sharing their unique brand of country music back in 1970 when they opened for Alice Cooper and Hot Tuna. Their style was a refreshing break from other music of the time. Benson said, “We wanted to break that mold. We were concerned more with this amazing roots music, which we felt was being lost amid the politics. We were too country for the rock folks and we were too longhaired for the country folks. But everybody got over it once the music started playing.” The band got their big break when musical icon Van Morrison said, “There’s some relatively unknown group around that I really dig. Asleep at the Wheel, they play great country music,” in a 1973 Rolling Stone Interview.

Music Director Marcelo Bussiki shared that, “the idea of performing with Asleep at the Wheel came out of a live performance in Brenham. I was so excited about the energy on the stage and in the audience that I thought a combination with the symphony would magnify that experience.” When asked about collaborating with Asleep at the Wheel, Bussiki stated, “I met them backstage after the concert and proposed a show. That was three years ago—we are now making it happen, and very excited that we are part of the 50th anniversary tour of this legendary Texas band. This concert will be a special treat for our audience.”
In the half a century following their inception, Asleep at the Wheel has produced over 20 albums and garnered 20 hits on the Billboard Country charts. Through the years, they have had a host of revolving members in the band bringing various talents and backgrounds to add their own flavor to the music, but always with Ray Benson at the helm. Asleep at the Wheel has also won an incredibly impressive, ten Grammy® Awards. The BVSO™ is thrilled to present this concert for an experience like no other. Executive Director of the BVSO™, Dr. Mary Koeninger shared that “the collaboration between Asleep at the Wheel and the BVSO™ will be an electrifying marriage of orchestral music and country swing that we could not be more enthusiastic about.
