Before we dive into ‘What’s Hot – What’s Not’ for Fall 2022, let’s take a moment to reflect on how wedding trends are set.
Wedding trends are established in response to what we see and experience around us – from fashion to film, art to actors, socio-political factors to social media messages…trends are influenced by what we hear and what we see around our state, our country, and our ‘world.’ Wedding and event trends are influenced by popular websites like The Knot, Style Me Pretty, and Pinterest, and by bloggers and other influencers in the wedding space. Wedding and event businesses wield considerable trend influence as well. Event stylists can only offer wedding couples what they can source, mostly from local wedding vendors operating in nearby markets.
Wedding tastes are constantly evolving and ever-changing, and those of us who work in the wedding world make it our business to know what’s in – and what’s not. Wedding and event pros who are in tune and in touch with current wedding ‘fashion’ are the means to trendy ends for savvy wedding couples. We’re immersed, on a daily basis, in all things wedding. And whether you turn to a planner, catering professional, florist, photographer, wedding rental and décor provider, or all of the above, know that we’re not only trend setters, but ‘trend watchers’ too. Here’s a look at the trends we’re seeing in upcoming fall weddings and events we’re working on and in wedding watch sites all over the internet.
Black is so in!
At Premiere Events, we’ve built black bars, black stage facades, purchased ‘naked’ tables and painted them black, bought black barbacks, not to mention added new black linens and tabletop options. Black and white pairings, especially in dance floors, continue their popularity in our market. We love it when wedding couples use classic black and white in fun, creative ways.
The rise of the traditional
wedding elements – pearls, ivory, pretty much what we saw about 10 years ago . . . and 10 years before that, is back. For décor, that means lots of timeless pieces – gold or silver, pretty chairs, neutral linens. Recognizing that the well-appointed reception table is the wedding guests’ ‘first look,’ and most memorable impression of the day, wedding couples are emphasizing table tops, including chargers, glassware, fun flatware, and textured napkins.
Color-wise, September, October, and November weddings often have the boldest palette.
We see fall weddings that pair brilliant autumn hues with warm and cozy accents – others that feature majestic jewel tones complemented with natural candlelight or sophisticated lighting patterns. One wedding trend website (clearweddinginvites.com/blogs/wedding-theme-trends) advises, “Embrace the colors of the season, or let your favorite trendy fall colors dominate your color scheme.” Sound advice.
Customization is a common 2022 theme, and is likely to find its way into spring of 2023.
Custom monograms, custom neon signs, custom treatments on everything from mirror-front bars to ‘ghost’ chairs to acrylic accent pieces – clients and customers are looking for ways to make their ceremony and reception décor their own. Even if they’re using items they or their guests have seen before, they’re using them in different ways or adding a different twist. When budgets permit, wedding couples are even incorporating custom runways and carpets, custom backdrops (for photo ops or to disguise venue shortcomings), custom tent top or tent wall treatments . . . unique ways to convey their own vibe and tell their own story.
Here are some additional trends currently featured in popular wedding trend-watch websites:
- Themed rehearsal dinners (with the formalities reserved for the following day’s ceremony and reception)
- Big blowout weddings (in stark contrast to the micro-weddings of recent Covid past)
- Fewer guests celebrating in ultra-elegance; wedding weekends
- ‘Open-Air’ (aka ‘Topless’) tents
- Multiple and specialty bars (each featuring a different family of spirits or ‘tasting’ options)
- Hanging florals and elaborate balloon décor features are in – family style meal service is out
- Twinkle lights are waning in popularity – technically sophisticated celebrations are gaining ground
It’s also interesting to note that the 2022 wedding boom has opened the floodgates for the unique and unusual.
In today’s crowded wedding market, it can be daunting to book a popular venue, engage a busy event professional, or make arrangements with a wedding rental provider. Competing with ‘everyone else’ can be a challenge! This reality is leading some couples to look for untraditional solutions to today’s ‘wedding problems.’
We recommend being fearless – just because ‘it’ hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it can’t happen for you.
Look for wedding trends everywhere you go – in every happy experience and down every road. You might be the first to start a new trend that catches fire and burns bright for years to come. We Wish you Love . . . and Luck!
