The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with a mobile Education Center, comes to Veterans Parks & Athletic Complex from April 27-30.
The exhibit honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. The display tells the story of the war, The Wall, and the era, putting American experiences in a historical and cultural context.
The free display will be open 24 hours daily starting at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 27. It closes at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 30.
The Wall That Heals is transported in a 53-foot opening trailer with built-in exhibits. The Education Center tells the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall, and a divisive era in American history.
The three-quarter scale Wall replica is 375 feet long and 7½ feet high at its tallest point. Visitors experience The Wall rising above them as they walk toward the apex, a key feature of The Wall in Washington, D.C. You can also create name rubbings of individual service member names.
The mobile Education Center exhibit features digital photo displays of area service members and veterans honored through the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s In Memory program. Also included are video displays about The Wall’s history and impact, educational exhibits, a replica of the In Memory plaque, and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War.
The Wall That Heals is a program of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the nonprofit organization that built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in our nation’s capital in 1982. Two VVMF staff members lead on-site volunteers, educate visitors and students, and ensure The Wall’s reflective atmosphere.
Since its debut in 1996, the exhibit has been displayed in more than 700 communities. In 1999, it toured Ireland, followed by a visit to Canada in 2005.
USAA generously sponsors The Wall That Heals tour through a partnership with the Truckload Carriers Association, the trucking industry, and Blue Beacon.
