Stephanie Cobb (b. 1992, Bowling Green, Kentucky) is a M.F.A. Candidate at LSU College of Art + Design and has received a B.F.A. in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. She has exhibited her work in group exhibitions including those in galleries in Savannah, Louisville, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Baton Rouge, Monroe, and France. After graduation from SCAD, she focused her professional experience in museums and for nonprofit organizations in the art and science fields. Cobb has attended residencies at the Burren College of Art (Ballyvaughan, Ireland) in 2017, Kentucky Foundation for Women (Louisville, Kentucky) in 2018, HOME (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) in 2019, and with the Arts Council of Brazos Valley (College Station, Texas) in 2020.
Stephanie’s exhibit will feature artworks that focus on portraiture and the figure with her painting surface of choice being a blank canvas. “Canvas surfaces, specifically experimenting with sizing and grounds, have become increasingly important to me as a place of investigation in material,” she states. Stephanie’s technique involves different modes of application and materials which have versatile characteristics that bridge painting and drawing. “After I tone the canvas in either raw sienna or a neutral cool gray, depending on the level of warmth I want to show through, I draw with a variety of brushes and palette knife, constantly shifting, scraping, and wiping away marks.”
“I have an interest in painterly improvisation, measurement, and the structure of a painting. While I want to highlight the drawing skill done in the underpainting, I am willing to be flexible in the next stages. I want my work to highlight materiality and ambiguity of expression. How do I paint, rather than what am I painting? The ways that paintings are built can carry as much content as subject matter.”
The gallery is open to the public, free of charge, on Tuesday-Friday from 10am-5pm and on Saturday from 1pm-4pm. Stephanie’s exhibit, Portrait of a Friend, will be on display from July 30th – August 29th. If you have a large group interested in seeing the exhibit, please contact us at info@acbv.org to coordinate the visit.
