As temperatures drop, it’s crucial to prioritize safety when heating your home. Follow these tips to reduce fire risks and protect your household:
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly.
- Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets — never use extension cords.
- Keep flammable items at least 3 feet from heat sources.
- Clean lint and dust from electric heaters to prevent fire hazards.
- Never use ovens, stovetops, patio heaters, fire pits, or grills for heating.
- Place generators outside, far from your home, to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Use a sturdy screen with fireplaces to block sparks.
Dispose of cooled ashes in a metal container, away from your home.
