The two-day event is one of the largest events of its kind in Texas. Visitors can walk through narrated WWII living history displays including: General Patton’s Command Tent, Camp Lili (American Signal Corps Unit), US Infantry and Airborne Paratroopers camps, as well as German Infantry Camps.
Military history buffs will want to see the award winning display of operational military vehicles and artillery. With a vast collection spanning from WWII to the Vietnam era, it features a Stuart, a Chaffee, M4A1 and M4A3 Shermans, M18 Tank Destroyers, and a variety of WWII Jeeps, trucks, Command and Scout Cars, and Half Tracks. For those who want to take some history home, there will be over 30 vendors at the military market selling items ranging from patches, medals, toys, uniforms, vehicle parts to vehicles. One person’s trash is another’s treasure!
Not to be missed on Saturday at 11 am and 1 pm is the demonstration of historic small arms weapons used by both the allied and axis forces in WWII.
The weekend’s most spectacular event is the WWII battle reenactment. The Museum of the American G.I. is one the few places in the nation where visitors and living historians can experience the heart pounding spectacle of infantry forces maneuvering for position in simulated battle, as restored American and enemy tanks charge through opposing lines. Far surpassing computer simulations and digital reenactments, spectators witness firsthand the drama of World War II battles. This year there will be a once in lifetime opportunity to see an historic warbird demonstrate a bombing run as well.
Here is a sample of what you will see at the Open House:
