Remember those carefree days when playing in the mud was the ultimate fun, and getting dirty was just part of the adventure? Now, you can give your kids that same nostalgic experience without worrying about cleaning up at home.
Splatter into Mud Day, a free, family-friendly come-and-go event on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8-11 a.m. at the Gary Halter Nature Center at Lick Creek Park. The event is a hands-on way to explore mud, learn about nature, and have fun.
You’ll learn that mud is more than just dirt and water. It’s home to critters, a tool for planting, and even serves as building blocks for nests. Sometimes the messiest parts of nature are also the most fascinating.
Here’s a closer look at the fun and learning in store:
- Try your hand at mud archery by throwing mud balls at a target.
- Help replant the gardens by creating and tossing seed balls into the soil.
- Step into the mud kitchen and make a mud pie, cupcakes, or even a bowl of mud soup.
- Take home a mud painting as a muddy memory of your day.
- Learn about mud critters, including worms, dung beetles, and other creatures that thrive in the muck.
- Jump into the mud pit and transform into a mud monster of your choice — get as muddy as you like.
- Discover how swallows build their nests from mud, then help add to a giant swallow nest.
Bring a change of clothes or plenty of towels for the ride home. Quick rinse stations will be available on site. Additional parking is available at the Lick Creek equestrian entrance off Rock Prairie Road.
So, grab your sense of adventure, your friends, and your family, and dive in for a muddy good time.
