Here at Bryan Broadcasting, it’s getting a lot fuzzier in these halls. My male co-workers are growing cancer fighting Tom Selleck mustaches, raising awareness for men’s health, and hopefully, rackin’ up some donations along the way.
Movember is the leading global organization in changing the face of men’s health. By growing hideous mustaches or “mos,” men are hoping to create a dialogue about the often ignored issues of men’s health. It’s a conversation long overdue. 1 in 7 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, yet, most men only go to the doctor if something is about to fall off. Taking a page from women’s health movements like October’s Breast Cancer Awareness, Movember has stepped up to the plate to raise funds for men suffering from prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health issues.
Like most great ideas, the concept for Movember revolved around a few beers. Since its inception in Australia back in 2003, the foundation has raised $559 million to date and funded over 800 programs in 21 countries. A lot of green and a lot of mos – that’s over 4 million mustaches worldwide.
Men, start growing your mustaches today and encourage those around you to get educated about men’s health. Use your new hairy ribbon as a walking, talking advertisement.
And ladies, don’t think this is just for the boys. Think of your boyfriends, husbands, fathers, brothers, and encourage them to get wellness checks, learn family histories, have colonoscopies, and live healthier lives.
