Michael and I met on a blind date at a “fancy restaurant” on campus called Sbisa Dining Hall. He told me about his passion of being in the Corps and the Aggie Band, I talked about how fortunate I was to be raised in Aggieland, and we both bonded over a love of the Aggie family. Before we knew it, we had talked until closing time and the dining hall staff kicked us out!
In December of 2013, Michael had just walked the stage and graduated from Texas A&M University! Michael invited both of our families to take some formal photos around campus to celebrate his occasion. He surprised me with a beautiful new dress to wear for photos and he sported his dashing Corps uniform. After photos in front of the Academic Building, there was one special place on campus we had yet to photograph – The Century Tree. Michael had escorted me beneath its branches before, it was just like any other time…until he took my hand, knelt to one knee, and asked me to marry him and to “please say yes.” I laughed and said “of course!”
Michael joined the Army the following year and wedding planning was hard. After choosing a date and booking several vendors, we found out his training dates unexpectedly ran right through our plans. Between the Aggie football schedule and Michael’s military career, arrangements were tough and our venue refused to rebook with us due to his military uncertainty. We were back to square one. One day, I woke up and thought “Why don’t we just go back to one place that means the most to us?” Michael looked back at me and said, “That’s the best idea I’ve ever heard.”
We took a shot in the dark and planned our wedding ceremony beneath Texas A&M University’s beloved Century Tree, celebrated our reception in Bethancourt ballroom at the Memorial Student Center, and rode away to the Aggie War Hymn aboard the famous Bus 12. God truly shined down a gorgeous ray of sunshine on us that day. We were surrounded by the perfect weather, special friends and family, and the absolute most wonderful people who all made our wedding day dreams come true. All we have left to say is “Thanks and Gig ‘Em!”
