When I moved to College Station from a small east Texas town, I was a single mom with two boys (ages 1 & 6), in the middle of a divorce, and just finished radiation treatment for thyroid cancer. I was relocating to the B/CS area to be closer to my little brother and his new wife, Kristin (my best friend). It was the beginning of a new chapter in all of our lives – a new home, job, elementary school, daycare, and the first time in 10 years I was living in the same town as family. After moving to town I naturally began to spend more and more time with my new “sister” and her family. A friendship that began innocently in conversations about my new job at the hospital where Kristin’s older brother, Clayton, also worked ultimately lead to a dinner at Shipwreck with beer and crawfish, on Valentine’s Day. They both insistent that it was NOT a date, but quickly I found myself thinking about Clayton often. In a moment of weakness after a spur of the moment shopping trip to Houston with Kristin, I tearfully confessed my interest in her big brother and what an amazing man I thought he was. She of course agreed, and after MUCH convincing Clayton finally gave in to my interest, the rest is history. Clayton proposed under the gazebo in his parents backyard (where we met for the very first time) covered in tulle and lights decorated by family members, surrounded by candles, and hundreds of rose petals. Of course my parents were in town from Houston to secretly watch as he got down on one knee. We were surrounded by family and ended the evening celebration over a home-cooked spaghetti dinner. Unsure of how soon we should try to get married since Clayton made some calls shortly after the engagement to see what was available. In less than 4 hours he had the venue, photography, catering, cake, and entertainment all booked. The wedding day can best be described as a dream come true, I felt absolutely beautiful and Clayton spared no expense to be sure I felt like a princess. My sister-in-law and I now joke that we are “sisters squared” since she is married to my little brother and I am married to her big brother. We were the matron of honor in each other’s weddings
