Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s 2013 edition ranked Bryan-College Station as the third best city to live in America. Reasons for this recognition include size, economy and the many benefits that allow residents to enjoy a convenient and comfortable lifestyle. One of those benefits is access to great health care which is appealing to young families and retirees.
Hospice Brazos Valley (HBV) is part of this vibrant community and is the only local, non-profit hospice providing high quality, patient centered care. HBV has served the Brazos Valley since 1989 and in those 28 years has cared for over 15,000 people. HBV prides itself on providing the best hospice and palliative care possible.
An integral member of the care team is HBV’s Associate Medical Director, Dr. Steven Higginbotham. Affectionately known as “Dr. H”.
Being a physician is a calling that occurred while a senior in high school. During that time his best friend was on hospice and eventually died of leukemia. The experience made a lasting impression. When he turned 18 years old, Dr. Higginbotham spent several years working as a hospice volunteer to fill his desire of giving back. Once he finished medical school and residency training, he joined Brazos Physicians Group as a Family Medicine Physician, and shortly after, started his career in hospice. He also practiced Family Medicine at Baylor Scott and White. Dr. Higginbotham became HBV’s full-time Associate Medical Director in 2015. Many of his former patients and their families who are now HBV patients, are pleased to learn that he will be their doctor again. His kind and compassionate approach to medicine supports hospice patients during their end-of-life journey. When asked about delivering care he states, “The best part of being a doctor is being able to step into people’s lives at a critical time to offer comfort and relief from their struggles. Hospice is my passion and my calling.”
Dr. Higginbotham spends most days seeing patients at HBV’s Inpatient Facility, seeing patients at home on HBV’s hospice and palliative care programs, and discussing with nurses and other hospice staff how to best optimize medical care for patients and their families.
