Are you looking for opportunities to become physically active? Summer is an ideal time to take advantage of opportunities for sports activities, whether joining a sports league, taking tennis lessons, or volunteering as a coach.
The City of College Station offers ample recreational opportunities for kids and adults. Sports participation is a fantastic way for kids to gain confidence, express themselves, and instill healthy physical and mental habits. Meanwhile, adults can fulfill their competitive desires, stay active, and make new friends.
The Parks and Recreation Department’s summer sports lineup appeals to all athletes, regardless of age or skill level – and you don’t have to live in College Station. You can register online, by calling 979.764.3486, or at our Central Park office at 1000 Krenek Tap Road, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Youth Programs (18 and under)
Summer Basketball League (June 6-July 27) – Register by May 21
Kids ages 6-13 learn the basic skills of basketball, teamwork, and training for the next level. Players are drafted to coed teams, and the season begins with two weeks of practice. The pre-draft workout is Tuesday, May 23. Participants also receive a jersey.
To apply as a volunteer coach, go to cstx.gov/sportsvolunteer. Volunteers must complete a background check.
Junior Beginner Tennis (June 5-July 17) – Register by June 9
The program is a fun introduction to tennis for youngsters ages 5-16. Beginners learn the basics of the forehand, backhand, serve, and volley in a fast-paced, interactive environment. The final session is a game night with a chance to win prizes.
Junior Intermediate Tennis (June 8-July 20) – Register by June 9
The intermediate program is for players ages 9-16 with previous instruction from a tennis professional on basic tennis strokes. Players focus on static and live-ball drills for singles and doubles. The last session is a fun game night with prizes.
Youth & Adult Programs
High-Performance Tennis Academy (June 8-July 20) – Register by June 9
The academy is for kids ages 14 and up interested in tournaments or leagues with previous instruction from a tennis professional on basic tennis strokes. Each session enhances technical, strategic, and physical capabilities through live-ball drills, match play, and conditioning.
Challenger Bowling (June 7-July 19) – Register by June 21
Everyone should experience the significant benefits of recreational sports, regardless of physical or developmental challenges. Challenger bowling is geared for special needs kids ages five and up and helps build confidence and self-esteem. Participants learn skills and challenge themselves in a fun, positive program tailored for them.
Adult Programs (Ages 18+)
Softball League (May 22-Aug. 10) – Register by May 7
Coed teams consist of at least four females and six males with a maximum roster of 20 players.
Kickball League (May 24-Aug. 9) – Register by May 7
Teams have 10-20 players with a minimum roster of four females and six males. The league uses an 8½-inch kickball.
3-on-3 Basketball League (June 7-July 26) – Register by May 31
The league follows FIBA 3v3 rules. Teams consist of three players and one sub and compete in half-court games 10 minutes long or the first team to 21 points. The round-robin style league concludes with a postseason tournament.
Beginner Tennis (June 6-July 18) – Register by June 9
The fun, active introduction to the game teaches basic strokes, scoring, and strategy. Participants also engage in fun games to increase their enjoyment.
Round-Robin Tennis League (June 6-July 18) – Register by June 9
The league is for adults comfortable with match play and interested in competing in a lively social setting. Players are guaranteed a doubles set (six-game, no-ad scoring) and single set (six-game, no-ad scoring) each week in a round-robin format, allowing competitors to face new opponents constantly.
Intermediate Tennis (June 7-July 19) – Register by June 9
The program is for players with previous instruction from a tennis professional on basic tennis strokes. Players focus on static and live-ball drills for singles and doubles play with a review of fundamentals for increased consistency. Point simulation and strategy are emphasized.
