For goodness sake, wear comfortable shoes!
Article by Erin Joyner
One of the craziest things I see as a wedding coordinator is women (mostly) who wear the most beautiful, AND the most uncomfortable shoes at a wedding. It’s not just the bride, it’s her bridesmaids, the mothers and many guests as well. But I want to talk to the bride on this topic, because my clients are my number one priority.
“Girls, I know there are some fancy and beautiful wedding shoes out there, but please consider their comfort as well as what they look like when choosing what you will be standing in for HOURS on your wedding day!”
I get it. It’s your special day and one that your will always remember. You want the very best for all aspects of your wedding. I’m not going to tell you to go cheap and ugly. However, sensible does not have to mean unsightly. Just like beautiful does not have to equate affliction. One very important consideration when choosing your wedding shoes is that, in most cases, your wedding dress COVERS your shoes! That’s right, your guests will never see your shoes until the garter toss, and most of them won’t even pay attention to them. Your photographer will most likely capture photos of your shoes before hand as part of their detail shots, but other than that, they remain hidden under your dress!
There are a couple of options to consider when you’re choosing your wedding shoes. One, you can wear those adorable, not so comfortable shoes for your ceremony only, with plans to change them immediately afterward. Two, you can just choose a pair of shoes that are comfortable. I’ve seen brides wear cowboy boots, pretty white tennis shoes, regular flat shoes that are cute, flip flops and sparkly ballet shoes. You may like wearing heels when you dress up, but most of the time, you don’t spend 5 or 6 hours standing in them. You just really don’t want to be in pain on your wedding day, and I see this often with my brides and I cringe every time. They usually end up just taking them off after a couple of hours.
Also, please ensure that your bridesmaids are comfortable in their shoes (and dresses for that matter) as well. People really don’t pay close attention to what kind of shoes your bridesmaids are wearing. I always recommend allowing them to choose a shoe that fits with your color scheme that fits their style and comfort level. Remember, they’ll be standing up there with you and if they’re not used to wearing the three inch heels you picked out for them, they will mostly remember how much their feet hurt at your wedding more than the details you would want them to remember.
There are plenty of comfortable wedding shoes out there and I think with a little bit of research, you can find some that you like both the appearance and the comfort.
