In June, the Lincoln Recreation Center invites you to meet, greet, and have meaningful conversations with Brazos Valley African American authors. Admission is free, and each publication will be available for purchase.
We’ll explore and celebrate the compelling variety of Black writers, whose stories span generations with an illuminating array of fascinating experiences – some in our own community.
Here’s the schedule:
“WHAT IF YOU LIVE? IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU!” BY SAM HILL
Thursday, June 2 • 6-7:30 p.m.
Learn from the inspirational words of Sam Hill in a book he dedicated to his grandson titled “What If You Live? It Could Happen to You!” The guidebook includes wise parables, words of encouragement, and moving illustrations for a young person’s journey into adulthood.
“THE SILENT DREAMER” BY JOHNNY MARTINEZ
Thursday, June 9 • 6-7:30 p.m.
Hear the story of Johnny Martinez in his book “The Silent Dreamer.” The inspiring memoir is about growing up in rural Burleson County and how he dropped out of school, persevered through many challenges, and obtained a college degree at 56. The overarching theme is about never giving up.
“MY HAIR IS SO COOL” BY ALICIA TILLOTSON
Tuesday, June 14 • 1-2:30 p.m.
Enjoy a storytime with Alicia Tillotson as she reads her inspired work, “My Hair is So Cool.” The story celebrates African American hair and normalizes the texture, color, and length, and instills confidence. Tillotson is an A&M Consolidated High School graduate.
“CHIP BAKER- THE SUCCESS CHRONICLES” BY CHIP BAKER
Thursday, June 23 • 6-7:30 p.m.
Chip Baker is a fourth-generation educator who has taught and coached for more than two decades. He’s also a best-selling author, YouTuber, podcaster, motivational speaker, and life coach. Baker interviews people from all walks of life and shares their stories for inspiration and motivation on his YouTube channel and podcast “Chip Baker-The Success Chronicles.” His motto is “Live. Learn. Serve. Inspire. Go get it!”
