UPDATE:
Bowl for Kids Sake was a HUGE success! Thanks to everyone who donated and came out to support Big Brothers Big Sisters. With your help, we raised $21,000.
Here’s a pic of our team: “The Bowling Stones”
Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organization that’s been in this country for over 100 years. Our local chapter is a little younger; BBBS Brazos Valley was founded in 2001.
The goal of BBBS is simple. By pairing local at risk kids with community volunteers, young people are given another relationship through which to seek encouragement, friendship, and support. Matches are made based on shared interests and personalities.
“Studies show that children matched with a Big Brother or Sister are less likely to use illegal drugs or alcohol, less likely to skip school, are more confident of their school performance and more trusting of parents and guardians.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Brazos Valley serves youth, ages 6-18, in Bryan and College Station. Currently, our program has around 90 matches.
All volunteers are fully screened and trained before he/she is matched with a child. After the match is made, professional case managers support the match and assist the volunteer with any issues that may arise. It is through this professional match support that Big Brothers Big Sisters is able to achieve such significant positive outcomes.”
I was matched with a lovely young girl named Kimberly! (Her mom would not appreciate any info being distributed on the web, so I’ll just say, SHE’S THE COOLEST.) We meet up a few times a month to gossip, watch redbox movies, do a little baking. I like to eat and she likes to cook, so it’s a match made in heaven!
If you have the time to help a child, I strongly encourage looking into BBBS. You can find their information here. You can also just help support this cause by donating and/or sponsoring BOWL FOR KIDS SAKE. Create your own team or help us meet our personal team goal of $500! (Maybe Kimberly will make chocolate lava cakes..)
