ART GALLERIES
The Forsyth Galleries at Texas A&M University in College Station presents Compare & Contrast: Exploring Form and Function in Design from Jan. 26–March 26, 2021. From a range of specialty items specifically designed to serve asparagus at the dinner table to highly decorative items to compartmentalize each of the items that a lady should have on her boudoir table, this exhibit features a wide range of products that met the American consumer’s need to have specific items to address specific needs. Many items from the Forsyth collections played a part in this seemingly insatiable drive to acquire items that would supposedly enhance the quality of their owner’s life. Examining some of these items and their function can provide an intriguing window into the life of the Victorian household.
The Forsyth Galleries at Texas A&M University in College Station presents Nationality & Design from Jan. 26–March 26, 2021. Art proved to be extremely important to the articulation of nationalism in many nineteenth century nations that were experiencing expansion and revolution. In America, enormous popular attention was focused on the Western United States with the media presenting a typically exaggerated view of the romance, anarchy, and chaotic violence for greater dramatic effect. Paintings and prints by a number of American artists, including Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington, would provide iconic images that would help craft the legend of the American West.

The Stark Galleries at Texas A&M University in College Station presents A Cast of Blues from Jan. 28–March 16, 2021. As one of America’s contributions to the world of music, the blues took root in the fertile soil of the Mississippi Delta, a flood plain covering 7,000 square miles between the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers. A celebration of Mississippi’s rich musical heritage, A Cast of Blues features 15 resin-cast masks of blues legends created by artist Sharon McConnell-Dickerson, as well as 15 color photographs of performers and of juke joints by acclaimed photographer Ken Murphy. The exhibition’s compilation of casts and photos create a compelling portrait of the men and women who defined—and continue to shape—the tradition of Mississippi blues. *Check out https://uart.tamu.edu/ or call 979-845-6081 for opening information before coming to see this exhibition.
The Stark Galleries at Texas A&M University in College Station presents Armchair Travel: Exploring International Art and Artists from the Permanent Collection from Jan. 21–March 10, 2021. Current travel restrictions limit our ability to visit other countries, but this exhibition offers the chance to explore other cultures through their art. Selected from Texas A&M University’s permanent collections, the art on display allows you to “travel” to the Far East, Europe, Africa, and all the way to Central and South America. Sculptures, ceramics, paintings, and prints by artists such as Sunol Alvar, Kathe Kollwitz, Joan Miro, and many more will educate, entertain, and inspire you.
The Wright Gallery at Texas A&M University in College Station will give Territory: The Exhibition in a Box its United States debut. The exhibition features a print collection curated by the Created and Contested Territories research group at Norwich University of the Arts in Norwich, England. Artists in the research group respond to complex ideas around ‘territory’ as a designation and as a concept in limited-edition prints. This curatorial project involves 10 collections of limited-edition prints housed in yellow clamshell portfolio boxes sent to international venues selected on account of their resonances with issues of territory. Face coverings required. Visitors in the gallery are limited to 10 people at once. This exhibition will be on display from January 11 – March 11, 2020; Open Mon through Fri, 8am – 4pm.
The Wright Gallery presents Something Tangible, by artist Bryan Florentin, on display from March 22 through May 20, 2021 (Mon-Fri). Unassuming materials salvaged from demolition sites and commonplace subjects from daily life are reimagined into conceptual photo and sculpture. The artist explores the relationship between object and image through photographs printed at 1:1 scale of depicted subjects. Images of Florentin’s studio installations are reconstructed in site specific installations that bring attention to both the present and past; real and represented. Visitors in the gallery are limited to 10 people at once; face coverings are required. Wright Gallery, College of Architecture, Texas A&M University. 3137 TAMU, Langford Architecture Building A, College Station, Texas 77843
