A Day in the Shelter

7 A.M. – Bright and Early! Breakfast is served for cats and dogs! Staff members and trained volunteers also begin cleaning each and every kennel. Staff members make notes of which pets need vaccines or who might need a trip to the vet for a medical evaluation.
9 A.M. – The office work must be done, too! Staff members update the Lost and Found Page of our website and check in with Foster Parents to see which pets might be coming back to the adoption floor that day. Our Volunteer Department also holds morning Canine and Feline Training Classes.
11 A.M. – Here come the people! The shelter officially opens to the public at 11 A.M. This means staff members now become adoption counselors – this is a process where we learn a little bit more about the human to better match them with a pet who will be most suited for the human’s lifestyle. Volunteers use this time as play time for the dogs and cats! Pets are given time out of their kennels and are taken to play yards to enjoy the morning!
2 P.M. – Afternoon Feeding Time! Staff members serve dinner to each pet. Volunteers continue to spend time with all the pets through play time and specialized enrichment activities created to keep the dogs sharp and alert. They also help introduce dogs into play groups. Just like humans, dogs like to hang out with their friends, too!
4 P.M. – Nap Time! Every afternoon we encourage downtime for most of our pets. Especially in the heat, we want our pets to be as cool and comfortable as possible in the afternoon heat.
6 P.M. – Closing Time! The shelter is officially closed to the public. Staff members make the rounds to ensure each pet has a clean kennel, a cozy blanket and a nice selection of donated toys to keep them busy!
How can I best help the Aggieland Humane Society today if I cannot adopt?
You can donate! We have a wish list full of treats and goodies we are always in need of for the many pets that come through our shelter. You can also donate to our general operations fund or our medical rescue fund. You can also volunteer! We have so many opportunities for volunteers to be a part of every aspect of the shelter life. You can visit our website today to learn more and apply to be a volunteer!
