Lead Makeup Artist and owner of Glow + Grace Artistry Kristen Hitt breaks the latest and greatest trends down for the Brazos Valley bridal community in the hopes of helping every bride find a look that is timeless, elevated, but most importantly, a look every bride can feel their best in on wedding day!
Bridal hair and makeup looks continue to evolve and vary from person to person. In recent years, popular styles have encompassed tousled, textured bridal buns or braids of all sorts and varieties. In addition, hair and makeup teams have also witnessed a transition away from full glam requests with strong contour and carved brows.
Beauty trends trickle down from Hollywood – where celebrities such as Hailey Bieber, Gemma Chan, and Kim Kardashian are splashed across the likes of social media, filling so many of us with inspiration. These women act as a guiding force for the look brides desire on their wedding day and the following hair and makeup trends the world sees today.
Maybe you are a bride-to-be who is searching high and low for the perfect glam that will fit who you are and what you want for your special day. Sometimes that search can be overwhelming but if you do find yourself in a spiral of Pinterest photos and scouring the internet for inspiration – then this read is for you.
Good Glowy, Blushy Skin
As a professional makeup artist, I have always loved a more minimal approach to bridal makeup. More than ever, we are hearing from brides that they want to look like themselves but elevated, with minimalist complexions and ethereal, effortless skin. When they say glow, they mean a glow from within – not necessarily an over-application of complexion products and powdery highlighters.
This request is also most often accompanied by a neutral, matte eye with a pop of shimmer in the inner corners for balance, slightly flushed cheeks and a lip color that is the perfect punch of color without being too bold or too nude.
Skin Care & Skin Prep
This particular approach means that skin care and skin prep is key. We encourage brides who love this look to really invest in their skincare regimen and drink lots of water every day leading up to their wedding. The client’s skin type determines how each artist will prep their skin for makeup application.
Pro Tips:
- For normal to dry skin types, I love the Weleda Light Facial Moisturizer.
- For more oily skin, try Sonia Roselli’s Water Balm.
- Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter offers the perfect amount of glow while evening out the skin. I also love Dior’s Backstage Face and Body foundation.
- Each of these products offer a blurring property to minimize any skin imperfections while staying true to the look of effortless, radiant makeup.
Peachy, Neutral Blushes
Peachy, neutral blushes and high quality highlighting products are also incredibly important to achieving an ethereal complexion. Brides want the glow without looking like they tried hard for that glow! A perfect, neutral shade of blush provides balance to the face so you stand out in photos without overpowering the entire look.
We recommend blushes like Patrick Ta’s “She’s So LA” or “She’s Sincere” paired with Dior’s Backstage Highlighting Palette for the perfect touch for every bride.
Perfectly Rosy Lips
Top it off with a rosy lip that is close to the same shade as the color of the inside of one’s bottom lip and you have the perfect lip shade to round out the entire bridal look.
Some go-to lip products are Makeup Forever’s Wherever Walnut lip liner (also a favorite of celebrity makeup artist, Kelli Anne Sewell) paired with Mac Cosmetics lipstick in “Brave” or “Cosmo.”
Sleek and Chic Bridal Hair
While there are plenty of brides who still love those effortlessly tousled and textured updos, hair artists have seen a large uptick in requests for polished, romantic and chic hairstyles that will continue to transcend across time and trends.
The inspiration photo we see the most of is Emily Herren’s ever-so-soft but modern glam waves, crafted by Candice Hollub of The Lovely Hair Class. This signature, all-down look has become one of the most requested hair looks we see in almost every wedding booked today. This particular style is an interpretation of “Hollywood Waves” but kept more modern with a middle part, and securing both sides of the hair behind the ears. It can also be transitioned into a sleek pony with the same soft waves or tucked into the perfectly swept bridal bun for brides whose hair has trouble holding a curl. The less texture or ridging, the more chic the look.
The return of the more polished and smooth look is effortless but thoughtful while still bringing a wow factor for your debut down the aisle. Try Moroccan Oil Pro Medium Hold hairspray for hold and longevity. Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine spray brings a beautiful shine to the hair style. For something extra to a style like this, small pearl pins can be slid into the hair from any angle to add something special to this look.
