Our Brazos Life team has been seeing this DIY foamy coffee all over the internet for weeks. We decided to try it to see what all the commotion was about. What we discovered: there’s a reason Dalgona Coffee is all the rage – it is damn near the most delicious coffee you’ll probably ever craft in your home without an expensive espresso machine.
So where did this deliciousness originate? And how can you make some?
Origins:
This foamy coffee has been made in India, Pakistan, and Macau for decades, where it is known as whipped coffee or beaten coffee. However, its recent surge in popularity (and name) comes from a popular K-drama that aired in January of this year (2020). In an episode of Pyunstorang, actor Jung Il-Woo travels to Macau, tries the tasty drink, and nicknames it dalgona for its similarity to the beloved South Korean street candy of the same name. Since then, the drink has gone viral on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. The beauty of this gourmet-esque coffee beverage is that it can be made easily in the comfort of your own home: making it the perfect quarantine caffeine fix.
Want to give it a try? Here’s how to do it:
Ingredients:
- Instant coffee
- Sugar
- Hot Water
- Milk
Directions:
- Combine equal parts instant coffee, hot water, and sugar in a bowl (2 tablespoons of each ingredient will make one serving).
- Mix by hand with a whisk or electric mixer until a toffee colored, thick foam is created. You should be able to create peaks with the foam. Think whipped cream consistency.
- Pour a glass of milk about 3/4 of the way full. Dollop the coffee foam on top.
- Drink it like that, or mix the foam and milk together for a deliciously light and airy drink with all the caffeine of a double-shot, and all the creaminess of a steamed latte.
