“We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill
My name is Katy Dempsey. In addition to co-hosting “Morning Candy” on Candy 95 here in Bryan/College Station, I love to volunteer. I designed this website to directly connect our community with opportunities to serve it.
Organizations always need help. I created Brazos Life as an outlet for groups, fundraisers, events, people, and anything that might otherwise fly under the radar here in town. Just because a group lacks the budget for proper advertising, does not mean it is not a worthwhile cause!
I also wanted a place where people with varying interests and passions looking to give back could find the perfect group for them. I know that just because I champion a certain cause, it does not mean that it will resonate the same with all audiences. Different organizations and ways in which you can help are regularly updated on the site. I like to think BrazosLife has something for everyone.
Helping others helps you. It’s a win-win situation. Whether it’s gaining experience in a certain field, acquiring new skills, getting course credit, meeting people and expanding a network of contacts, there are many benefits to getting involved. The greatest effects however, are a little more difficult to measure. These are not hours “worked,” but contributions made.
When given freely, acts of volunteerism can bring communities together. Often, the smallest of these have the biggest impact. If just one person feels motivated to join, give time, or donate to a certain cause because of a story we’ve highlighted, I’ll consider this a success!
Be it a giant festival benefiting a group you love, a teacher whose achievements to the community you see as worthy of recognition, or a backyard BBQ for a friend undergoing cancer treatment, no event should go unnoticed. Send any and all charity updates to firstname.lastname@example.org. Together, we can make a difference!
